Description: | Collection of thirteen black-and-white photographs taken by LIFE photographer Henry Groskinsky on April 4, 1968, following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The photographs show the Loraine Motel where Dr. King and leaders from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) were staying during their support of the Memphis, Tennessee, sanitation workers strike; civil rights workers Andrew Young, Ralph Abernathy, and Will D. Campbell; images of buildings near the Loriane Motel; an African American hotel employee cleaning the balcony where Dr. King was shot; Dr. King's packed suitcase; and the airplane that flew Dr. King's body back to Atlanta. Each photograph is accompanied by a brief description of when and where it was taken. The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata. |
