Included in Issue 8, June 2006, of the quarterly journal, History Now; American History Online. "Songs were an integral part of the American civil rights movement. Singing inspired large groups of people at church meetings, street demonstrations, and marches. Many of the songs were traditional hymns and spirituals with lyrics that had several layers of meaning and expressed a desire for freedom. Other hymns and spirituals were given new words to emphasize the struggle for more specific issues such as voting rights. Each of the six songs in this jukebox played an important role in the civil rights movement and reflects the defiant spirit of the time." The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata. |
