| Description: | Black-and-white photograph showing a group of African American nurses from the Army Nurse Corps in England, 1944. These women were the first African American nurses to serve in England during World War II. The United States Armed forces faced a major shortage of nurses during this war, and initially, African American nurses were not allowed to join the Army Nurse Corps. Due to the protesting of civil rights workers and organizations, African American nurses were ultimately permitted to serve. The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata. |
