Description: | This poster features a large image of Doris "Dorie" Miller, an African American sailor who is celebrated as a hero of the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941. He led his fellow sailors, many of whom were injured, to safety, and he used a machine gun to shoot down Japanese planes. He was the first African American sailor to receive the Navy Cross. Miller died in battle in 1944. The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata. |
