In 1959, Prince Edward County shut down its public schools in response to the Supreme Court's decision regarding school integration, and white citizens of Prince Edward County created a private school that exclusively admitted white students. African American children had no access to public education until 1963, when the Prince Edward County Free School System was formed using federal financial support. The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata. |
