| Description: | March 1968, Forrest County Circuit Court (Hattiesburg, Miss.) trial of Cecil V. Sessum for the January 1966 murder of Vernon Dahmer and the firebombing of his house and store. Sessum's wife, Mary, outside the jail. A March 12, 1968, Hattiesburg American article reported she "tried unsuccessfully to enter the courtroom carrying a .38 revolver in her purse." Percy Quinn, Cecil's defense attorney, said she carried it "for purposes of self-defense." The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata. |
