Records collected by the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission in January 1967. The file contains correspondence between Erle Johnston, director of the Sovereignty Commission, and Mississippi leaders and members of the public with questions about Mississippi. Letters from the public include one from New York asking about church burnings and one from Michigan asking about poverty in the Mississippi Delta. The file also contains correspondence about the creation of a pamphlet with answers to commonly asked questions about Mississippi to send to newspaper editors and to students seeking information. Johnston also corresponds with Joe Patterson, Mississippi attorney general, about the wording when responding to inquires about the murder of three civil rights workers in 1964.

The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
