Title:Letter: to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Washington, D.C., 1960s
Date:1960-1969
Description:

Image of a letter to President Dwight D. Eisenhower from Jim Dombrowski. Dombrowski asks the president to grant amnesty to imprisoned Americans who were convicted under the Smith Act. The Smith Act, passed in 1940, made illegal advocating violent overthrow of the government or membership in any group or society devoted to such advocacy. Dombrowski states that political persecution "alarms our citizens and our friends in other countries."

The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
