Encyclopedia article about Martin Luther King Jr., Baptist minister and president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the most prominent African American leader in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. King graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and Morehouse College in Atlanta, Crozer Theological Seminary in Upland, Pennsylvania, and Boston University in Massachusetts. He was pastor at Dexter Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama and co-pastor with his father at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. During the Montgomery bus boycott King was asked to head the Montgomery Improvement Association. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
