Encyclopedia article about Malcolm Bell Jr. who provided civic leadership for Savannah as a banker, historian, and civil rights advocate. His historical works make readers think about the nature of the African American experience in the South. He also helped to build the Georgia Historical Society into a major force in the study of state history. Bell attended the University of North Carolina and the Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II (1941-1945) and later became president of the Savannah Bank and Trust Company. Bell also served as chairman of the chamber of commerce, the United Community Appeal, and the Savannah Port Authority.
