| Description: | Carnell Locklear recalls his fight for Lumbee Native American rights in eastern North Carolina in the 1970s and 1980s. He describes his efforts, via both nonviolent protest and legal means, to attain federal assistance for Lumbee Native Americans, who long before had earned government recognition at the price of benefits. Locklear describes his ascent through the ranks of the protestors, his sudden descent and the movement's fracture, and his life after departing the movement. The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata. |
