| Description: | Forged letter allegedly from the Ku Klux Klan to S. Isaiah Benson, principal of the Scott's Branch School in Clarendon County, South Carolina. The letter warns that Benson should not appear in judgment against anyone in South Carolina or elsewhere. It also warns that any African Americans who support Benson are also at risk of being killed. A handwritten note by Joseph A. DeLaine, Sr. explains that the forged letter was intended to influence jurors to hand down a $20,000 judgment against him, but that the conspirators were caught. The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata. |
