Title:Photograph, c. 1938, (Clarendon County, S.C.), of African American school on Spring Hill A.M.E. Church property
Date:1937-1939
Description:

Black-and-white photograph of the African American school in the Spring Hill African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church property in Clarendon County, South Carolina. A typed note on the back of the picture claims church members maintained the school until Joseph A. DeLaine, Sr. organized the Parents' Committee on Action and the Clarendon County, South Carolina, school segregation case, also known as Briggs v. Elliott. The note also indicates the photograph was taken about 1938.

"On the opposite side is the school building on the Spring Hill A.M.E. Church property, what was kept up by the members of the church before Reverend DeLaine organized the Parents at Summerton, in Clarendon County to go to Court for 'Equal Educational Opportunities for All Children.' This school was demolished just before the May 28 Fourth Circuit in Charleston was heard. Now the modern school is built near this site."--verso photograph
