Smith, executive secretary of the Memphis branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) during a downtown business boycott in Memphis, Tennessee. Smith wears a sign that reads "Don't shop boycott" an African American young man wears a sign that reads "Black youth must have more jobs!"
