Creator:Knox, Jack, 1910-
Title:First dance with Lyndon, circa 1964
Date:1964
Description:

An original political cartoon drawing created by Jack Knox, the Nashville Banner editorial cartoonist from the mid-1940s to early 1970s. This caricature depicts President Lyndon Baines Johnson with a "Civil Rights Hop Program Dance" card in his pocket as he awkwardly dances with a reluctant woman ("Dixie Dems"). Historically, a dissenting group of Southern Democrats known as Dixiecrats split from the party in 1948 to form the States' Rights Party. In the 1960s, during the years of segregation politics, many of the party members went Republican all through the South when Lyndon Johnson supported the Civil Rights Voting Act bills and other progressive programs. Forms part of the Jack Knox Political Cartoon Collection.
