Title: | Are you aware of the planned Negro invasion? |
Date: | 1959 |
Description: | Pamphlet issued in 1959 by States' Rights Action in Memphis, Tennessee, protesting integration and asserting connections between the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and communism. The pamphlet reprints several articles from the Tri-State Defender, the African American newspaper in Memphis. It offers evidence of conspiracy for African Americans to win in upcoming local elections, to integrate white neighborhoods, and attacks on segregated schools. It reports that schools in Little Rock, Arkansas, may not open in the fall despite attempts by Governor Orval Faubus to keep the integrated schools closed. It also prints the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of some members of the NAACP, and claims the source of the racial trouble is O. Z. Evers, an African American who works for the postal service and recently moved to Memphis. The University of Tennessee Libraries (Knoxville, Tennessee) is the digital publisher. The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata. |
