Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. sits on a couch and speaks to a reporter from an office or a living room. King's reply to the reporter's question on the purpose of the pilgrimage is interrupted with several audio breaks. King first indicates that the pilgrimage, which will be held at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., will demonstrate the unity of African Americans seeking civil rights and will protest "the violence and terror" that accompanies the struggle, especially in the South. He also reports that the pilgrimage will bring attention to the civil rights bill in Congress. King claims its passage is being blocked by a small minority. Soon after its 1957 creation, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), an organization of African American ministers promoting civil rights, announced plans for a prayer pilgrimage to Washington. Pilgrimage sponsors included the SCLC and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), as well as other civil rights leaders. An estimated twenty-five thousand people from thirty states attended the pilgrimage, held on the third anniversary of the United States Supreme Court Brown vs. Board of Education decision outlawing segregation in public education.
