Title:WSB-TV newsfilm clip of reporter Lo Jelks commenting on the controversy surrounding the Board of Regent's confirmation of Dean Rusk's appointment to the faculty of the University of Georgia, Atlanta, Georgia, 1969 December 28
Date:1969 Dec. 28
Description:

Reporter: Jelks, Lo, 1939-.

In this WSB newsfilm clip from December 28, 1969, reporter Lo Jelks stands in front of the Board of Regents office in Atlanta, Georgia, and comments on the controversy surrounding the appointment of former secretary of state Dean Rusk to the law school faculty.

The clip begins with reporter Lo Jelks standing in front of the Board of Regents office in Atlanta, Georgia. The dome of the Georgia State Capitol building is seen in the background. Jelks begins by explaining that usually the Board of Regents approves faculty appointments without questions. However, after University of Georgia president Dr. Fred Davison appointed Dean Rusk as a professor of international law, some of the members of the Board of Regents objected. Jelks outlines reasons for the regents' opposition including Rusk's lack of qualifications, his position on the Vietnam war, and his daughter's marriage to an African American man. Jelks reports that most commentators believe the regents will confirm Rusk's appointment, an action that requires a majority vote from the fifteen members of the Board. Jelks concludes that the regents will meet the following day to vote on the appointment.

Dean Rusk, former secretary of state, was confirmed as a member of the University of Georgia School of Law faculty on December 29, 1969 by a vote of nine in favor, four against. Rusk taught international law at the university from 1970 until 1984.
