Title: | Rev. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. chats with actor Orson Welles, circa 1944, Los Angeles |
Date: | 1944 |
Description: | Photograph of Rev. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., second from left, chatting with actor Orson Welles, right. The four men appear to be on a movie set, because the words "20th Century Fox" are printed on a cabinet on the left of the photo and Welles wears a theatrical costume. A civil rights activist in New York City, Powell succeeded his father as pastor of Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church in 1936. In 1944, Powell was elected to the U.S. Congress, where he challenged the informal regulations forbidding African-American representatives from using Capitol facilities reserved for members only. Powell introduced legislation to outlaw lynching and the poll tax and to ban discrimination in the armed forces, housing, employment and transportation. The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata. |
