Carpenter, Cassell

Biography:

Born to a wealthy family in Natchez, Mississippi, Cassell Carpenter attended boarding school in New York before returning to Mississippi to begin work as a civil rights activist. Carpenter briefly attended University of Mississippi before deciding to enroll at Millsaps College in Jackson. While in Jackson Carpenter continued her involvement as both a leader and organizer in the civil rights movement and helped co-found The Kudzu, an underground newspaper aimed at highlighting civil rights issues.
