Biography:
Rufus E. Clement was the sixth and longest-serving president of Atlanta University; he served for thirty years, from 1937 to 1967. He was also elected to the Atlanta Board of Education in 1953, and with that victory became the first African American to be elected to public office in Atlanta since Reconstruction.
