Fortson, Warren Candler, 1928-
Biography:
County attorney for Sumter County, Georgia. During conflict in 1965, Fortson asked the Americus city council to form a biracial committee. When his request was denied, he formed a committee on its own. Once news of the committee leaked on August 4, 1965, the city council derided its formation, thus rendering it ineffective. In response, Fortson was ostracized by the community and that fall moved with his family to Atlanta.
