Biography:
American lawyer, judge, and scholar whose nearly 30 years as an influential federal judge included service as chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit from 1989 to 1993; referring to himself as a "survivor of segregation," he energetically championed integration and civil rights and in 1995 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the U.S. -- Encyclopaedia Britannica
