Long, Herman H. (Herman Hodge), 1912-1976

Biography:

Herman Hodge Long was born in Birmingham, Alabama on May 2, 1912. After spending his childhood in Chicago, Illinois, Long returned to Alabama to attend Talladega College. Upon his graduation in 1935, Long began studying race relations with sociologists at Fisk University, and was eventually hired to administer over the university's Race Relations department. After serving as the department's director for over fifteen years, Long was offered the prestigious position of president of Talladega College where he served until his death on August 8, 1976. Throughout his career Long maintained close ties with Highlander Folk School in Monteagle, Tennessee and Southern Educational Fund Conference.
