Melish, William Howard, 1910-
Biography:
William Howard Melish was born in 1910, the son of well-known theologian and Episcopal priest John Howard Melish. Melish attended both Harvard University and Jesus College at Cambridge University before becoming assistant rector, under his father, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, New York. During the 1940s, Melish became active in the American Labor Party and was a founding member of the National Council of American-Soviet Friendship. His ties with Communism proved controversial and Melish was eventually relieved of his duties at Holy Trinity. Melish also became involved with the civil rights movement in the South and served as a regional representative for Southern Patriot, a monthly periodical published by Southern Conference Educational Fund.
