"American lawyer and academic who while practicing law (1930-36) in Houston, Texas, and serving as a teacher and administrator (1936-60) at Howard University, Washington, D.C., was involved in a number of important civil rights cases; he successfully argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in Bolling v.
