Williams, Robert F. (Robert Franklin), 1925-1996

Biography:

Robert Williams, husband of Mabel, was the descendant of a long line of assertive African Americans in Monroe, North Carolina. Robert's militant attack on segregation in the community lead to many clashes with the white leadership. Williams armed himself and trained fellow African Americans in armed self-defense. He demonstrated to desegregate and all-white swimming pool and ran for mayor. Eventually, Williams left Monroe and moved out of the United States.--From Oral Histories of the American South biography.
