Wirtz was a U.S. public official, educator, and lawyer, born in DeKalb, Ill.; B.A. Beloit College 1933, LL.B. Harvard University 1937; admitted to the bar 1939; professor, Northwestern University Law School 1939-42, 1946-54; federal government work during World War II; undersecretary of labor 1961-62; secretary of labor under Presidents Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson 1962-69; stayed in Washington, D.C., to practice law. -- Encyclopedia Britannica
