"American politician who gained national fame as mayor of Los Angeles from 1961 to 1973, a time of economic growth and civic improvement but also one of inner-city unrest that in 1965 erupted in riots in the Watts section; at first a liberal Democrat, he became increasingly conservative during his years in office and was especially controversial for his outspoken racial views (b.
